Best Coast, “The Only Place”
The Only Place, 2012
Best Coast like California. If you were in any doubt before about this, the band from said U.S. state have written their new single about it, made their album cover a picture of a bear clutching it, and if you’re still not sure, their band name may or may not reference it.
So before you even start to listen to this new single, you already know what you’re in for. A sunny, feel-good song that extols the virtues of their home state like real estate agents with guitars.
And in that sense, it’s not disappointing. It’s waves of strummed acoustic with bright plucked electric riding over the top. The vocals are swathed with reverb and are backed up with jaunty harmonies as they power through the sometimes trite lyrics:
“So leave your coat behind/ We’re going to make it to the beach on time”
It’s a bit of a departure from their garage rock debut of a couple of years ago, but Best Coast certainly know we’re they’re going. I think it may be California.
