Dave Matthews Band, “Gaucho”
TBD, 2012 (RCA, V2)
The first glimpse at the upcoming album (as yet unnamed), Gaucho dances between depressing social commentary and a rousing call-to-arms.
Their usual musical mixing has remained, with instruments popping up and vanishing like a game of Whack-a-Mole and with genres smeared from right to left.
Over a hopping string section and a sparse shuffle, Matthews bemoans that “There must be more than this”, before flipping the tempo and mood and singing “We could do anything, we flew to the stars and back”.
The trite children’s choir in the bridge threatens to fall flat but is saved by the creepy atmosphere of the backing, before everything melts into a typical DMB jam session.
